The first evidence of skiing is from around 6300 BC to 5000 BC and skis made of hard wood dating from this age were found near Lake Sindor, in Russia. Other skis have also found in other locations made from the bones of large animas, with leather straps to bind the person’s feet to the ski. It is thought skiing evolved from snow shoeing as a mode of transport in northern Europe and Asia. The earliest skis were the pre-runners of modern day cross country skis and were for traversing across flat slopes.

A word sounding similar to ’ski’ was used in Finland as far back as 6000 BC and cave drawings dating back 4000 years have been found in Norway showing skiers. Many old skis have been found in Norway dating back to around 3340 BC to 2940 BC.The ‘Salla’ ski was found in Finland and was 180 centimetres long and 15 centimetres wide and was thought to date from 3300 BC. Bog finds in Russia and rock paintings in Scandinavia show that skiing was definite a part of life in and around 3000 BC. The first ski with a curved edge was found in Finland and dates from 770 BC while the Liperi ski, found in eastern Finland, has a flat sole with a rounded boot space and dates from 450 BC.

Around 1500 years ago people started using skis lined with badger skin with bindings to attach the skis to their boots and in the Battle of Oslo (1200 AD), the Norwegians used skiing as a way of spying on their Swedish enemies. In 1747 Norway formed its first army Ski Company.

It was the Norwegian Sondre Norheim who developed the basis of skiing that we use today. In the 1850’s he experimented with creating stiff bindings using wet birch roots to tie his boots to his skis, thus allowing him far more control and then in 1870 he invented shorter, curved skis with more flexibility to allow turning. Mathuas Zdarskey then used this idea to develop even stiff bindings and allow the technique of pushing one ski at an angle to turn into the fall line and control speed on a descent. Hannes Schneider then went on to develop different stopping techniques, many of which we still use today.

Free skiing developed in the 1800’s but it did not become a recreational activity until 1868 when the mountains became more accessible to skiers by train and electric funiculars were invented around 10 years later to take skiers up the mountain. It was not until the early 1900’s that skiing became popular and the first ski lift was invented in 1908. The development of the Telemark ski in the 19th century revolutionised skiing as it enabled much easier turning and the first ski package holidays were offered in 1903 to Switzerland. The first slalom race was held in Switzerland in 1921 and the first winter Olympics in Chamonix, France not long after. In 1930 New York hosted the first big air competition and in World War II, Finland troops used ski patrols to resist the Russian invaders and in 1945 the Americans fought the Germans in the Italian mountains on skis.

The first aluminium skis were invented in France in 1934 and in 1935 the first bindings to also grip the heel were used. By 1960 fibreglass skis were being successfully marketed and in 1964 all plastic boots were being used. Through out the 1950’s and 1960’s skiing was a sport enjoyed by the affluent classes but as ski resorts grew and more package holidays were offered it became a sport available to more.

Cold conditions and seasons of snow have made humans more ingenious and have made them design some of the most challenging and dangerous sports. One of them is skiing, where people talk to the air while zooming down dangerously steep slopes on a pair of long, flat runners, with nothing between them and injury other than their skills and the snow. Skiing was invented to facilitate travel, but has today become one of the most popular forms of winter recreation.

Skiing can be done in a variety of styles, under numerous different conditions. All these have varying difficulty levels and require certain precision as well as risk-taking capacity. Of all the types of skiing, perhaps the most difficult is to ski in freshly fallen snow that has not had the time to pack and attach itself to the ground. Fresh snow on the ground is called powder and thus this type of skiing is also known as powder skiing. As it is fresh, powder melts easily and gives no particular traction to skiers and so to ski on it is tricky and requires lighter moves and stricter balance than skiing on packed slopes. People who have a general love for skiing especially enjoy powder skiing as it allows freer movement and larger scope for speed. However, most people take time to master powder skiing as it presents a lot of problems to the amateurs.

One of the most common problems associated with powder skiing is the tendency of the ski boots to dive in to the snow and stall the skiers or even throw them off. This occurs because the snow is loosely arranged and easily gets displaced by the skiers and stuck between the shoes and the skis. Diving can be prevented by using skies that are not very stiff and by avoiding too much forward bending. As the snow is unevenly packed, the legs tend to get off balance and skiers find it tough to move both feet in tandem. This is generally a problem associated with inappropriate alignment and skiers must address it as such.

But did you understand that there are some amazing skiing resorts in the state which you need to take a look at, even if you live in the surrounding states, like Georgia or Alabama? Right here can be a post to some of the best resorts in the south which you and your family members will appreciate.

One of the most important things you’ll want to figure out when you’re making plans to visit skiing resorts in North Carolina is to find out where you’ll be lodging. You and your family can go to some of the hotels and inns in the area, such as the Hemlock Inn. This inn is in the Blue Ridge Mountains, and is close to lots of natural attractions in North Carolina, so while you’re visiting the skiing resorts, you may want to walk on the nature trails, or do a little fishing.

You can also check out ski schools which are close to the Sugar Ski and Country Club. This resort-style country club provides very good services like a tennis court, a basketball court, as well as a heated pool so as to warm up soon after a day at the slopes. The legitimate ski resort is nearby, so you can vacation in the country club and easily stroll over towards the lifts to have a go at your skiing on slopes for varying skill levels.

Resorts for example Beech Mountain is at 5506 feet above sea level, Ski Beech is the highest ski resort in Eastern North America. Sugar Mountain at Banner Elk, North Carolina located two miles east Banner Elk, Sugar Mountain Resort is North Carolina’s largest ski spot with 115 skiable acres and also a vertical drop of 1,200 feet. Mars Hill, North Carolina: Located only 30 minutes from Asheville in western North Carolina, Wolf Ridge Ski Resort delivers 19 slopes serviced by two quad chairlifts, two double chairlifts and one surface lift.

If you need to make a camping trip out within your visit to the skiing resorts in North Carolina, you’ll find a great deal of places to pitch your tent or park your RV. The Bear Den Campgrounds are a terrific fit to take the family, and you could possibly even go towards the campgrounds to search out a Christmas tree for the year! You’ll find also loads of activities proceeding on at the Bear Den, including 50 percent off price on cabins throughout specific days in the winter, the Spring Easter Egg Hunt that is held for young campers every year, the Mother’s Day special, in which moms can appreciate a free breakfast during their vacation. There’s also beach music plus a 4th of July celebration going on at the campgrounds throughout the summer time, so you don’t have to wait around to enjoy this and other skiing resorts in North Carolina–you can take advantage of them within the warmer months as well.

To get outfitted for clothes or brand name skis for much less, the web can be a primary base for bargains. One of our favorite spots to look is Skis.SnowboardsSkis.com for cheap ski deals, ski wear and ski gear.

If you desire more great options on the best way to come across skiing resorts in North Carolina, check with your travel agent about booking a trip for your family there soon. You’ll surely be glad you did, you can engage in other experiences like bird watching, canoeing, rafting, and hiking in addition, to not mention the wonderful Southern fare you are going to crave right after a day of skiing. Enjoy!

It’s wintertime and you love to ski or snowboard, but like many, is your budget tighter than last year? Have no fear, it is still possible to enjoy a winter ski vacation on a budget. Here are some tips:

Destinations

Consider ski destinations that are less expensive. Try to ski closer to home. Live in Los Angeles? Then consider one of the ski resorts closer to home, like Mammoth Mountain or Big Bear. Skiing closer to home saves you on travel costs and travel time. Some resorts even offer special deals for locals.

Transportation

When you are flying to a ski destination, you need transportation to and from the airport. If you rent a vehicle, it will most likely be an SUV, which is a gas hog. More often than not, you won’t even need to use your rental car very much. A much more economical option is to take an airport shuttle. Not only is the cost much less than a rental, but you’ll also save money by not having to spend on gas, insurance and other fees associated with a rental.

Equipment

If you’re on the budget, but your old ski equipment doesn’t seem up to snuff, why not rent equipment instead? Renting is especially cost effective if you don’t plan on skiing more than once or twice during the season.

Timing

You’ll find better deals on ski packages, transportation and resorts if you are willing to be flexible with your timing. Better deals can be had during the low season, during the week instead of the weekends and late in the season. You’ll also want to avoid planning a trip around all holidays. You’ll pay more around the holidays since more people tend to have time off during them. So skip Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Years, MLK day, Valentine’s Day, St, Patrick’s Day and Easter if you want to avoid paying more.

Accommodations

You’ll find good deals if you time it right, but being flexible in your choice of where to stay will expand your options even more. Don’t forget to compare prices by calling around to all the lodges and resorts in an area. Don’t forget to ask about any special deals.

Package Deals

One of the best ways to ski on a budget is to get a package deal. Hotels, airlines and travel companies often use package deals to drum up business or to get rid of excess inventory at a lower cost. Package deals can often include air, transportation, meals and even lift passes. Find great package deals on the many online travel sites. You should also consider looking at last minute travel options. Some great deals can be had if you are willing to travel on short notice.

Telemark skiing is a form of skiing in which the heel is not attached to the binding of the ski. In order to make a turn the skier drops the knee and raises the heel of his or down hill ski, sliding it back while the uphill ski remains in a forward position, allowing him or her to turn.

Telemark skiers are attracted to this form of skiing as offers a exceptional workout and is graceful and artistic. Compared to fixed-heel Alpine skiing, telemark skiing offers many more dimensions to the physics of the skiing turn, offering the skier a potentially deeper and perhaps more inspirational experience on the mountain. An analogy for telemark skiing to traditional downhill alpine skiing could be driving an automatic car to a stick-shift standard vehicle as driving a standard offers the driver increased dynamics to controlling the vehicle.

Telemark skiing is said to have been invented by the Norwegian Sondre Norheim (1825-1897) in Morgedal, which is in the Telemark region of Norway. Actually, according to archeology, skiing had been practiced from throughout Scandinavia and northern Russia for over 4,000 years on wooden skis for transportation, work, hunting and military purposes. However, Norheim was credited for developing and introducing a revolutionary binding which included a strap around the heel in addition to a just the toe. Norheim was known for his graceful dancing-like skiing techniques, ski jumping and fun personality.

Telemark, also called Nordic and freeheel skiing remained mainstream through the 1920s with freeheel ski jumping and Nordic Combined being the two ski events at the first Winter Olympic Games in 1924. While telemark skiing was adequate for the rolling hills and flatter terrain of Norway, fixed-heel, or Alpine skiing was introduced going into the 1930s in European Alps as Alpine skiing was more suitable for steeper slopes in that region. Eventually Alpine skiing became the mainstream for skiing as Austria and Switzerland developed the first Alpine ski resorts after World War II and Telemark skiing faded out in the coming decades.

However, starting in the 1970s in the United States there was a revival in telemark skiing as a of ski patrol workers in Crested Butte, Colorado found it easier to use lighter freeheel skis to scramble up and down the mountain to perform avalanche-control operations. This soon led to a revival of freeheel skiing which spread through the United States, particularly in northern Vermont, and into Europe. Through the 1980s telemark skiers used leather boots and long straight-edged skis, making turning a difficult task. However, in recent years freeheel skiing has been made much easier one the body thanks to the development of plastic boots and shorter parabolic skis. Today free-heel skiers can be seen at most ski resorts “dancing” down the mountain and even performing tricks on in the terrain parks! Telemark skiing has caught on to the extent that it is almost has somewhat of a cult-like following and thousands of skiers are now trying it for the first time every year.

What is Heli Skiing?

Heli skiing is off-trail, downhill skiing that is reached by a helicopter, not a ski lift. Heli skiing can be a great opportunity for most skiers, but read on for more information about Heli skiing and how to choose a Heli Skiing experience that will be safe and enjoyable.

The birth of Heli-Skiing

In April 1965, Hans Gmoser was intrigued by an idea that, although fanciful, seemed practical – an idea that had never been tried by any resort in the world. Hans began using helicopters to transport enthusiastic skiers high into the thin air of the otherwise-inaccessible Bugaboo Mountains in the Rocky Mountains of Canada. Heli skiing, as it became known, was born and became an instant success.

Is Heli Skiing for You?

Heli skiing isn’t for everyone, so before you plan your trip, it’s best to see if a Heli skiing tour is something that will be safe and fun for you. So, is Heli skiing for you? Ask yourself the following questions to see if a Heli skiing tour would be a good experience for you.

A. Are you a good enough skier or snowboarder? Heli skiing isn’t for first timers’. You should be both capable and experienced in handling a mixture of conditions, whether they are on one plank or two.

1. You should have considerable skiing experience in a conventional resort setting.

2. Your run choices are predominantly blue/ black and you ski them with confidence in almost any conditions.

3. Your skiing ability has improved year after year and you are capable of multi-day ski trips.

4. You may not have the style of a paid skier, but you have the confidence to keep up with friends and you know when you are making some ‘good turns’.

5. You can make parallel turns with confidence and if the situation arises, you can; side-slip, step-up sideways, traverse and make kick turns.

6. In the process of becoming a better skier, you have made the transition from novice level equipment to high performance gear and can also spot the difference.

7. You may not have tons of powder skiing experience but you can maintain control in backcountry conditions.

B. Are you fit enough? Skiing and riding powder all day is super fun but is physically demanding. You need to be of a good level of fitness to get the most from your heli skiing experience.

C. Accept that there is risks involved? Safety is always the number one priority for Heli skiing oeprators. However, it’s necessary to realize that when you take on mother nature and her mountains, anything can happen. All heli skiing operations will require you to sign a comprehensive waiver of liability before you can go skiing.

What to Expect While Heli-Skiing

Here’s more information about the Heli skiing experience.

Heli Skiing Groups

On most Heli skiing tours, heli-skiers are led by an experienced guide who will lead a group of skiers. You may be skiing with as little as 6 or as many as 12 skiers. This varies depending on which operator your book with. Most operations offer private heli skiing charters too.

Heli Skiing Tour Length

While heli-skiing, you can expect around 5-12 runs or heli lifts in a day. Your guides will constantly be assessing and searching for the best (and the safest) snow. In some locations, you might take one long run down the mountain, stopping in various places for break. Most heli skiing operators offer daily, three, four and seven day packages. When avalanche conditions are high you may end up skiing easier more gentle slopes.

Conditions

Heli skiing conditions can really vary, according to the day you’re skiing and where you’re skiing. However, Heli skiing is known for its opportunity to allow skiers to access amazing powder and this is your best chance to ski the champagne powder snow. However conditions often vary from run to run due to wind and solar aspects. Be prepared for variable conditions. It’s best to check with your Heli skiing tour for specific information about the snow conditions and weather prior to booking your trip.

Heli Skiing Safety

The primary safety concern of heli skiing operators is the danger of avalanches. Reputable Heli skiing operations employ highly trained guides and pilots who are experienced in evaluating snow conditions, snow stability, and risk management. Don’t worry – most tours will include in the price the use of avalanche transceivers and will provide training on the use of them and other avalanche rescue equipment.

Where Can I Try Heli Skiing

Heli skiing is truly a global sport and can be enjoyed all over the world. Here is a list of where countries where you can go heli skiing:

Canada, Alaska, New Zealand, Himalayas, (India and Nepal) Russia, Turkey, Greenland, Argentina, Chile, Sweden, Finland, Switzerland, France, Austria and Italy.

And Finally

Heli skiing is the ultimate skiing and boarding experience. Endless acres of deep powder snow, solitude in the big mountains to be shared with friends and family what more could a skier or border want?

Vermont skiing is an option that suits both beginners and advanced skiers. The place has Nordic and Alpine resorts that will make your stay worthwhile. The height of the slopes is about 2000 feet. This is way above that found in other areas. The region has fantastic snow that makes the sport exciting.

The skiing areas are strategically located to ensure the that the environment is preserved. Activities such as recycling are adequately practiced to ensure this goal is achieved. The area has beautiful natural surroundings. The region has enhanced the habitats of wildlife. Some of the ways that this has been done is by establishing corridors for bears. This is done by having wetlands close to the mountains to allow the bears to feed themselves.

Vermont skiing is a recreational activity that will do good to your body. The condition of your heart will improve. Your mind will be challenged to go for the best. Your spirit will be lifted. There are transportation facilities that allow skiers to park their vehicles conveniently.

Vermont skiing has led to the development of youth corps. These are involved in planting trees on the Jay Branch Brook. At least the fishes have shade. If you love experiencing new cultures, try using the village shuttle services. You will learn quite a lot from the people. If you have never skied before, you can be trained by the instructors at the area. The training involves skiing slowly and stopping at short distances. It is advisable to practice on a flat surface before trying a slope.

There are many reasons to visit Washington State but for the winter sports enthusiast what better reason could there be than to visit the challenging ski resort of Crystal Mountain? During the winter months Crystal Mountain is ideally placed to provide snow-capped peaks of over 7,000 feet, standing proud below the towering Mount Rainier which climbs to over 14,000 feet.

The months of November to April bring several feet of fresh powder snow to Crystal Mountain, this being a reliable happening thanks to the cold Cascade storms common to this area. This factor alone makes a compelling reason to visit this first class Washington State ski area.

There are breathtaking views of Mount Rainier from the summit of Crystal Mountain. The area positively bulges with 2,300 acres of fabulous skiing and here you will find every kind of skiing you can imagine, making this the largest ski area in the state of Washington.

Of particular appeal to advanced and intermediate skiers who will enjoy 87% of all runs, there are some 7 runs for beginners which amounts to a generous variety for all levels. Intermediates are best catered for with 57% of all runs and of all the runs the very longest is called Northway and stretches for 2.5 miles or 4km.

With a definite bias in the distribution of trails towards the more experienced skier, lift capacity runs at 20,000 per hour. There are 2 high speed quads, 2 high speed sixes, 2 triple chairs, 4 double chairs and a surface lift for children. Despite leaning towards the more experienced skier, lessons are available and it is possible to rent skis and other equipment as required. This is also useful in the event of losses and breakages.

There is a Kids Club that is open from 8am to 4pm each day for children aged four to eleven years old. They will be well looked after while the experts in the family explore the remainder of the resort and experience the thrill of skiing the black diamond runs. The Kids Club supervises skiing on the appropriate slopes for their charges and there is also snowboarding available for children aged 7 – 11 years old. Children will learn while having fun and being supervised on the slopes while the remainder of the party can enjoy the challenging terrain that this Washington ski resort offers.

For those who enjoy back country skiing, Crystal Mountain has two back country areas which can only be reached by hiking. This is extreme and unforgiving terrain and the ski patrol has specific rules for those looking to ski in these areas. Covered mainly in thick woodland, North Backcountry does have some trails which have been cut through the trees.

The season runs from the middle of November to the middle of April, when the best snow fall is experienced. There are many places to choose for lodging, meals and evening entertainment. After a day of skiing, you should definitely head over to East Peak Massage & Fitness to take advantage of the hot tub, sauna, showers and even the games room. Massages are available with a reservation. In the summer of 2004, Crystal built the Campbell Basin Lodge, a Cascade-style lodge serving pasta, pizza, soups, teriyaki, burgers, salads, Mexican food and more.

For a superb vacation skiing in Washington State this is a great place for the family. Everyone can have a great experience at Crystal Mountain, even though the slopes are more for intermediate and expert skiers. Novice skiers can have fun as well as long as careful attention is paid to the grade of slope attempted.

The mental challenge of skiing. I have recently come back from a skiing holiday in New Zealand. Queenstown to be precise. While I was away from my work as a Psychologist for the week one thing that come through quite strongly for me is the mental challenge that skiing presents. It is absolutely critical to be focused on the moment and your technique. I found that I could not become distracted for even one second, otherwise I would fall over and even worse.

The highlight of the week for me by far was a hike and ski that I undertook with 2 buddies. On the afternoon of our second day skiing we decided to hike up to the top of the highest mountain and ski down untouched powdered snow, to finish about 1K from the skiing village. A bus would bring us back. Very few people attempted this run as no chair lift was present to take you to the top. But I remembered looking at it all day and it was almost calling me to do it. It was my Everest. While I expected it to be a physical challenge – which it was – especially the hiking part of it. The hike and ski turned into more of a mental challenge. And through doing it – I gained enormous clarity, especially during the hike part. It was a case of putting one foot in front of the other on the way up the mountain. I couldn’t allow myself to look down the mountain because it was too steep or think how far it was to go or how on earth am I going to ski down it or how much energy I had left. The sheer focus I needed was extraordinary – I couldn’t afford any errors. I was totally in the moment. I had never witnessed this amount of focus ever in my entire life. We took 4 breaks on the way to the top of the mountain, where we would sit in the snow. The breaks were as important as the hike cos It gave us a chance to mentally switch off as well as physically recover.

At the top we celebrated for a few moments and took a few photos and just as I was about to take a video a huge gust of wind came through and we all ducked for cover. This was the universes way of saying to get out of there and stop mucking around.

The ski down was magical. I was extremely mindful not to make any mistakes in the thick powder snow. But I was also very aware to actually enjoy the experience and not to view it primarily as a task to complete and tick off.

At the bottom of the hill after the run it was pure excitement when I caught up with my 2 buddies. I had barely known them 2 days but that day I felt that I really bonded with them and got to know them a whole lot better, even though very few words were spoken. It was absolute, utter contentment.

And that is the mental challenge of skiing.
